Embark on an exciting journey for sustainability leadership | chapter 2: PURPOSE, make the move
In my last blog HERE, I shared my findings and exploration about the purpose from both the perspectives of what and why. The next questions are, how do organisations deliver the sense of purpose across different range of environmental, social and governance (ESG)? How do we make the first move? Does it mean to some extent, we would need to sacrifice the bottom-line? What would be the possible headwinds? Could we win the buy-in from all stakeholders? Will they advocate and support us? There are no easy answers to these questions. With this, I continue my journey in searching the right recipe to make a move, learn and fine-tune along my sustainability leadership development. While building from scratch, I revisited my ‘5Es’ with slightly tweaked humbled ‘Es recipe’, as shown below.
1. Enthusiasm: must have the strong and authentic will, passion and zeal from within to drive the change.
2. Engage: engage with stakeholders and audience earlier with open heart, ensure consistent messages and commitments being delivered.
3. Empower: able to use enablement and empowerment to build trust and excellence.
4. Envision: able to foresee and imagine a future possibility for sustainability, forward-looking, possess boldness and confidence in embedding sustainability to business for a better future
5. Ethical: have strong moral principle, holding high integrity and transparency. (thanks to Harriet Wood, my CISL peer coaching trio!)
6. E2 (Embrace and Empathy): It is never an easy task to lead an impactful change and to influence others to think and act differently outside of their comfort zone. Empathy helps us understand the thoughts of another, embrace helps us accept the diversity of our audience. (thanks to Yvonne Leung, my CISL peer coaching trio!)
